This coffee comes to us from Fazenda Sitio Da Torre, which is under the operation of Garcia family – Edson Rosa to be exact whom we’ve carried coffee from over the years. Edson and his wife Marisa Coli are more or less the supervisors of the operation, who with help of their in-laws, handle most farm management. This is no small task. In addition to basic coffee production, Sitio Da Torre goes to great lengths to run an environmentally ‘clean’ operation, separating any waste for recycling at the city of Carmo, maintaining local springs, fencing off areas to preserve local flora and fauna – they also provide health care for the families of all their farm laborers. Elevation at the farm ranges from about 1150 – 1300 meters and they produce both Pulp Natural and Natural coffees, this particular lot being Pulp Natural, and they grow varietals Acaia, Yellow Bourbon, and Yellow Catuai. This family has won several awards at the BSCA (Brazil Specialty Coffee Association), including taking 1st place overall for their Pulped Natural coffee.

Our vision ensures that our direct involvement both financially supports and rewards the quality of coffee. The effect is twofold. This fosters improvements through farms reinvestment and infrastructure into equipment and facilities. Furthermore, this enhances the quality each harvest, contributing to the potential of higher coffee production. Purchasing both small(micro/nano lots) and large scale lots facilitates growth in higher production for producers and their supporting communities and networks.

Founder of Proud Mary, Nolan Hirte is now recognised as a pioneer of the specialty coffee industry in Australia. It was during a trip to Bali in 2006 that Nolan had come face-to-face with local farmers and the harsh realities of coffee production. The trip was a light-bulb moment for him and he committed himself to bridging the gap between farmer and consumer.

Fast forward to 2018 and Proud Mary has evolved to include roasting, wholesale, the Aunty Peg’s black coffee brew bar and the Collingwood Coffee College in Melbourne, as well as Proud Mary Cafe PDX, wholesale and roasting in Portland, Oregon, USA. These are all driven by the determination to see the hard work of coffee farmers recognised.
